Website Development for Large Construction Company - JW Design & Construction Website

Whoa! We've been busy this year (and it's only May). We are so pleased to announce that we just launched a terrific website for one of our longest standing photography clients. My husband, Dennis, has been shooting architectural photography for JW Design & Construction for at least 20 years and when they realized that we develop websites they knew our design department was a perfect fit.
Construction Company Website Design - Web Development - Studio 101 West Marketing and Design

JW Design & Construction does such amazing work throughout the Central Coast and California, but they have never had a web presence. The fact that I had access to years of spectacular architectural photography meant that I'd have no trouble building a great site, but building this site took some time because the portfolio needed to be so extensive. It was crucial to the client that their well rounded and extensive capabilities were demonstrated through the various types of building they do.

After almost loosing several large jobs because they didn't have a website, this hardworking construction company knew it was time to meet the 21st century. JW has been so successful on the central coast without a website that I can't wait to see how much more business they gain due to greater accessibility.

Business Websites - Construction Firm Website - Architectural Photography Website - Studio 101 West Marketing & Design
Our clients expect to rise to the top of search engine rankings after we launch a new website and of course they do. We spend meticulous time on Search Engine Optimization for each of our clients. Besides building websites that communicate well, work smoothly, and are well designed, we have a proven track record of getting top SEO rankings for each of our clients.

Chris from JW had this to say,
“I’m excited.  We are live... Two comments from people we have received so far: “AWESOME website. WOW” and “That thing is so cool, I was mesmerized.” Thank for all your patience and hard work.  I’m very excited to have the site up.”
You can check out their site here: JW Design & Construction.

Is Print Dead? San Luis Obispo Graphic Design Firm Takes a Look.

Printing in the age of technology - Studio 101 West Marketing & Design
Even though the presence of print has somewhat diminished, it is far from dead. Print is alive and well, it has just turned a new chapter. I have spent the past two months creating print packaging, ads, postcards, business cards, and trade-show graphics for a client who understands the value of good print design and marketing. Their business would be dead without it.

Honestly, we are not doing the same volume of print design as we did ten years ago. Gone are the days of large catalogs, annual reports, and service directories. The web has replaced a lot of those voluminous pages of fiber and I think that is a good thing. The web has allowed our communication to morph into cleaner ways of getting information, and for the most part it is much more intuitive. However, we find that print is still needed to drive people to the web. Our clients still need packaging and print marketing materials to drive their business to the consumer, but their website needs to be well designed, efficient, and match their brand to be fully effective.

Printing - Studio 101 West Marketing & Design

Last month, while in Nashville, we visited the oldest, concurrently running print shop in the country, Hatch Show Print (established in 1875). They are an old fashioned letter press shop with tons of old wood type and beautifully cut linoleum blocks lining their walls. Their four or five presses can't keep up with the volume of work they have. Their delivery schedule is 9-13 weeks out! As technology presses forward in this information age, consumers are clinging to print and more than that, we are craving the beautiful old craftsmanship of a time-gone-bye.

While many of us might be opting for digital versions these days, it will be a LONG time before we live without print in its entirety. Many businesses still have to use print to do business, but its getting harder and harder to find designers who know how to create good design that looks good coming off the printing press. Our 27 year old firm has had to adapt, but our adaptation hasn't said, "good bye" to print, it has said, "hello" to the web and has built it into a strong part of our marketing portfolio. Our past experience in designing for pint allows us to be more proficient in all phases of our client's marketing needs. This ability gives our clients the ultimate advantage of having one design firm handle all their marketing – keeping it consistent to their brand.

Print is here to stay, because the consumer still needs to touch and feel the product and we need to deliver in in a way that is practical and accessible.

Roost Logo Wins the 2014 American Graphic Design Award

Cenral Coast Logo Design - Roost Logo - GDUSA Winner - Awarding Winning Logo - Studio 101 West Marketing & Design

Roost, Templeton, CA
In a small, all-American, rural town on the central coast, lies a quaint little bistro called ROOST. When the proprietor came to me to design his logo, he told me that he wanted his restaurant to be the place where people come to sit and share their life with others – and of course share amazing food. Chef, Jim Griffin has a long history of opening restaurants, bringing them to financial success, and then selling them when he's ready for something different. He is a "foodie" if I have ever met one and his food is truly delicious. He sat in my office describing the food that was going to be on his menu and I got inspired, and hungry! You know a "foodie" by the way they think about and describe food — Jim is at the top of my list. During our conversation I made notes about the things that mattered the most to him and then got to work.

San Luis Obispo County Logo Designer - Studio 101 West Marketing & Design
The sketching process is still done by hand in our studio and the best of that process get further refined on the computer. We usually show the client at least three completed logos, which we feel are excellent options to represent their business or product. We presented six design ideas to this particular client. The final logo was hand-lettered (not an existing font) and illustrated.

Recently, we received notice that Studio 101 West Marketing & Design won the 2014 American Graphic Design Award for the Roost logo! In a brief congratulations letter from Graphic Design USA (GDUSA) they state,
"For five decades, Graphic Design USA has sponsored competitions to spotlight areas of excellence and opportunity for creative professionals. GDUSA's American Graphic Design Awards™ is the original and the flagship, open to all in the community: design firms, ad agencies, corporations, non-profits, institutions, and more. It honors outstanding work of all kinds and across all media. For the ninth straight year, more than 8,000 entries were submitted; a very highly selective 15 percent are recognized today with a Certificate of Excellence. In the rare case of multiple awards, a Certificate for each winning piece is enclosed."
Studio 101 West Marketing & Design actually received the "rare case of multiple awards." We received a total of three awards from GDUSA. The other two are for the logo design of the Central Coast Wedding Professionals (CCWP) and the branding program for the same organization, CCWP. (see CCWP blog post).

Central Coast Wedding Professionals' Award Winning Logo and Branding

The Central Coast Wedding Professionals (CCWP) is a home-grown organization which has grown and morphed over the past 25 years into THE industry standard of the central coast that it is today. This top-notch group of professionals number at around 100 members who range from venues to florists, from disc jockeys to photographers, and everything in between to make a wedding complete. The success of the organization is their commitment to hold their members to a high standard of accountability for the benefit of the bride and groom. Their motto is, "Accountable professionals – making your day perfect."

When CCWP's volunteer marketing director came to talk to me, the organization was in a bit of an identity crisis. Too many hands had created too many looks, which had diluted their recognition. The first step was to redesign their logo from one that had very little meaning to something which people understood.

The next step was to redefine their brand and set up guidelines for members or committee chairs to follow. We began by defining guidelines for the web, print, advertising, and television. By providing them with postcards, graphic emblems, brochures and social media designs we have managed to give them a quality "face" that their customers now recognize.

Where the Red Fern Becomes a Plate - Paso Robles Library Plate Auction

I was recently asked to paint a ceramic plate for the Paso Robles Library Artist and Celebrity Plate Auction, called BookPlates! The design of the plate was to reflect my favorite book or quote. I have ONE all-time favorite book and that is Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. I read it in seventh grade and still have my original copy of the paperback. I think it was the first book that actually made me cry. While homeschooling my kids I was able to introduce them to Little Ann and Big Dan as they also fell in love with the story. Consequently, we named our first dog Annie and my son named his dog Dan. Needless to say, I didn't have to think very hard about what my book was going to be – I was still chuckling about being asked to participate with the artists and celebrities.

The hardest part of this project was creating something that would hopefully bring in some money for the library, yet not fully knowing what it would look like until after it was fired.

The plate before firing. Here's hoping it turns out like I intended.
So mark your calendar and come out and bid on a plate (maybe you'll see a celebrity). The big event is November 22, 6:00 - 9:00 pm at the Paso Robles City Library.
